Walmart Introduces Apple Pay and Google Pay Options
Walmart is set to introduce Google Pay and Apple Pay as payment options in its stores. Starting August 24th, select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations will feature tap-to-pay capabilities, with plans to expand this service to all U.S. stores by the end of 2026 and to gas stations by mid-2027.
This move marks a significant shift for Walmart, which had been one of the last major retailers to adopt these popular mobile payment methods. Previously, the company supported the now-defunct CurrentC mobile payment service and launched Walmart Pay in 2016, allowing customers to check out using a QR code. Last year, a Walmart representative emphasized the company’s focus on its own payment solution, stating that they provided “convenient solutions” like Walmart Pay. However, the latest announcement indicates a change in strategy.
Walmart expressed its commitment to offering customers flexibility in payment methods, stating, “We want customers and members to have choice in how they pay, so they can check out in the way that works best for them. Tap to Pay is a great addition to the other payment options already offered like cash, credit card or Walmart Pay.”
