Patreon updates its algorithm to boost visibility for smaller creators.

Patreon has unveiled a series of new and revamped features aimed at creating a “better network – and a better internet,” as stated by CEO Jack Conte. The updated roadmap includes enhancements to the discovery algorithm, improvements in platform security, and new tools for both creators and their fans.

In a detailed blog post, Conte elaborates on these changes, emphasizing the need to counteract the negative trends seen in the previous generation of tech companies. He positions Patreon as a more favorable model for online creative and community platforms, stating, “The current version of the web is a failed promise for creators and fandoms. As creators, we can’t even reach our followers on the platforms anymore. Social media has created mass polarization, addiction, and made it increasingly difficult to build a creative community and business. I refuse to believe that this is the best way that the internet can work for creators and fans. I believe it can be better.”

The most significant update is a complete overhaul of Patreon’s discovery algorithm. This new approach will move away from recommending creators based solely on existing follower connections, which often favored larger creators. Instead, it will analyze posts in relation to one another, considering factors like topic, style, and themes. This change aims to enhance visibility for smaller creators.

Additionally, Patreon is rolling out short-form video features to better compete with platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts. An iOS tool called Clips will automatically identify standout moments in longer videos, allowing creators to transform these into short clips. These clips can be shared externally or on Patreon as Quips, a feature introduced last year. The platform is also enhancing video previews and creator page layouts for greater customization, including the ability to add custom unblurred thumbnails to public posts.

Further updates in the pipeline include Niches, which are community spaces centered around specific topics, resembling subreddits. There will also be improved verification processes for user sign-ins and anti-scraping measures to safeguard creators’ work from unauthorized use. These highlights represent just a portion of the announced changes, and for a comprehensive overview, Conte’s blog provides all the details.

Several of these updates are still in development and may undergo adjustments based on community feedback during the testing phase. This roadmap follows a significant staff reduction of 20 percent in January 2026. At that time, Conte expressed his belief that while “AI does not replace humans,” the integration of this technology has “fundamentally transformed” the company’s operations.
