Pokémon’s Battle System Could Shift Away from Turn-Based Mechanics Soon
Pokémon games have embraced turn-based battle systems for three decades, but last year’s Legends: Z-A shook things up with real-time mechanics that challenged players to rethink their long-held strategies. While this change sparked mixed reactions, Pokémon Champions has emerged as a haven for fans of traditional turn-based gameplay, and it seems that developer Game Freak plans to keep this format alive as future titles may continue to innovate.
In a recent video on the studio’s YouTube channel, game designer Shigeki Morimoto and Champions co-director Kazumasa Iwao discussed the creation of the battle simulator. They emphasized their goal of preserving classic turn-based battles while allowing future games the freedom to explore new mechanics.
Morimoto shared insights on the evolution of the battle system, noting that the competitive rules that have defined Pokémon battles for so long might gradually shift as the series progresses. He acknowledged the long-time fans who have enjoyed the traditional style since the days of Red and Green, Gold and Silver, and felt it was important not to simply tell them to adapt to new versions without offering a familiar option. This concern had been on the minds of the Game Freak team for some time.
While they are eager for the series to embrace new challenges, they also wanted to honor the existing battle system. This led to the idea of creating a game that would carry forward the traditional mechanics, allowing players to continue enjoying them indefinitely. This concept was the foundation for Pokémon Champions.
Although they hinted at future games evolving their battle systems, specific details on how that might unfold remain under wraps. If Legends: Z-A’s real-time battles serve as a model for the future, it could be exciting, but some fans were not fond of that shift when the game launched on Switch and Switch 2 last year. Current leaks suggest that next year’s Winds and Waves will stick to the classic turn-based style, but whatever comes after could bring something entirely new. Only time will reveal what lies ahead.
