Black Mirror Confirms New Season Coming to Netflix

Get ready for another dive into the dystopian realms of science fiction, as an eighth season of Black Mirror is currently in the works for Netflix. Filming kicked off this summer, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet. Series creator Charlie Brooker is returning to write and executive produce, teaming up with Bisha K. Ali.

“Black Mirror will return, and hopefully it’ll be more Black Mirror than ever,” Brooker shared in an interview when the series was renewed earlier this year. “I can confirm that Black Mirror will return, just in time for reality to catch up with it. So, that’s exciting. That chunk of my brain has already been activated and is whirring away,” he added.

Since its debut in 2011 on Channel 4, Black Mirror has captivated audiences with its anthology format, exploring near-future dystopian scenarios that reflect our anxieties about technology. The term “black mirror” symbolizes the screens of our devices. The series has produced 33 episodes and a special over seven seasons, including the interactive film Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, which sparked more discussion than it perhaps delivered in execution.

The show has sparked mixed reactions from critics; some laud its sharp insights into modern society, while others criticize its heavy-handedness and bleak outlook. The anthology style contributes to this divide, as viewers can easily appreciate some episodes while finding others lacking.

Black Mirror has garnered multiple Emmy wins, with standout episodes like “San Junipero,” “USS Callister,” and the interactive Bandersnatch earning the Outstanding Television Movie award for three consecutive years from 2017 to 2019. However, some fans feel the series has lost its edge in the fifth and sixth seasons. Given how often people remark, “It’s like we’re living in a Black Mirror episode,” it will be intriguing to see if the show can continue to stay ahead of the curve.
