Jason Statham Reflects on His 9-Year Film Journey
Jason Statham has built an impressive film career, kicking things off in his 30s. Before acting, he was all about sports, particularly diving and swimming, which led him to a modeling gig while he also sold jewelry on the streets, just like his father. His big break came when director Guy Ritchie spotted him during a modeling job, landing him a role in *Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels* in 1998. This marked the beginning of an action-packed journey for Statham.
Since then, he’s racked up nearly 60 film appearances. However, fans have noticed a recurring theme: he often plays very similar characters. When asked about this, Statham had a thoughtful response regarding the nature of his roles.
In a 2017 appearance on a talk show, he was humorously questioned about whether he ever gets offered roles that stray from his typical tough-guy persona. “Like a mathematician going through a bitter divorce?” he joked. Statham admitted that such roles aren’t offered to him, and honestly, he’s not interested in them either.
While some actors seek to challenge themselves and explore diverse characters, Statham is content with his established tough-guy image. He considers himself more of an athlete and salesman than a traditional actor. “I’m not really some thespian that can adopt and chameleon himself into different roles,” he explained. He acknowledges that he hasn’t had the extensive training that many actors have, and he’s perfectly fine with that. Although he has ventured slightly out of his comfort zone in films like *Hummingbird* and *Spy*, he prefers roles that align with his strengths.
Here’s what he had to say:
“A mathematician going through a bitter divorce or something? No, I don’t get offered those [roles]!”
“I only want to do things that I think I could do a good job at, and I think I’d be no good at that. You know, I’m not an actor really. I mean, I used to work jewelry and pinch jewelry on the street. I was a sportsman for years. I’m not really some thespian that can adopt and chameleon himself into different roles. I just got into this by being in the right place at the right time… I got plucked from obscurity into the movie industry.”
“It’s not like I’ve spent years honing different accents or working on my craft. That doesn’t apply to me. I accept what I’m good at. I might not be good at any of it, but I accept what I feel that I’m confident at and just try and go with the flow in that direction.”
“A lot of the characters I play are pretty similar in some ways. I get a lot of the physical roles because I can do all that. So there’s an authenticity with that, so I tend to stick with that.”
So far, this approach has served Statham well, as he’s set to reprise two iconic roles in the near future: Adam Clay in *The Beekeeper 2* and Deckard Shaw in *Fast Forever*. He’ll also take on a unique role as… Jason Statham in *Jason Statham Stole My Bike*, directed by David Leitch.
Recently, a leak from a streaming service affected the box office performance of his latest film, *Mutiny*. Yet, even when things don’t go as planned, his dedicated fans continue to support him. This loyalty is a big reason why, despite his similar roles, audiences keep flocking to see his films. Now at 59, here’s hoping he has plenty more ex-soldier characters left in him before he decides to hang up his action hero boots.
With *Shelter*, he’s done it again, folks.
