The Witcher 4’s Official Release Window Announced
Witcher enthusiasts are no strangers to anticipation, having waited over a decade since the last main installment, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The wait for The Witcher 4 will stretch a bit longer, but fans now have a clearer picture of when they might finally get their hands on it.
Recently, CD Projekt Red’s joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski revealed that the studio is aiming for a 2028 release for The Witcher 4. “I know it’s a bit of a wait, and you’d love to play it sooner, but let the team cook,” he mentioned in a video shared on social media. While CD Projekt Red has plans to make announcements during Gamescom this week, Nowakowski clarified that The Witcher 4 will not be part of the showcase.
This 2028 target follows earlier statements from the studio indicating that The Witcher 4 wouldn’t be ready by the end of 2026, without providing a specific timeline beyond that. The studio has ambitious plans for the next chapter in The Witcher saga, aiming to roll out a trilogy within a six-year span. If all goes according to plan, a 2028 release for The Witcher 4 could mean we might see The Witcher 6 by 2034.
It’s an ambitious roadmap, especially considering that the original Witcher trilogy took eight years to complete (from 2007 to 2015), and development times across the industry have generally increased. Additionally, unforeseen delays could impact the release schedule for The Witcher 4 and its sequels.
Next up for the Witcher franchise is Songs of the Past, an expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This expansion will be highlighted at Gamescom, with Nowakowski hinting at “a surprise or two” during the studio’s livestreams throughout the event. Announced in May, Songs of the Past promises a fresh adventure for Geralt, who will take a backseat to Ciri in The Witcher 4. It’s expected to launch sometime next year for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
‘It’s been such a great journey,’ said voice actor Doug Cockle.
