Spider-Man Leads the Charge Against Racism as Marvel’s Top Hero
In a bold display of vigilante spirit, a Spider-Man cosplayer gained widespread attention over the weekend after confronting a group of white supremacists in Minneapolis. Footage captured the moment as the cosplayer took action against far-right “activists” brandishing a sign featuring a racial slur. The Spider-Man enthusiast leaped onto their truck, throwing punches in an effort to snatch away the offensive sign. A striking photo of the scene, taken by a local photographer, shows the cosplayer winding up for a punch.
The demonstration was led by Jake Lang, a well-known figure in the far-right scene and a participant in the January 6 Capitol riots, who has a history of racist provocations. Lang was protesting the sentencing of Shiloh Hendrix, a woman convicted of hurling racial slurs at a Black autistic child in a playground incident. However, his protest was met with a much larger counter-protest, as citizens of Minneapolis took to the streets to oppose the hateful gathering. A local reporter shared a video of the altercation on social media.
Following the clash, both the Spider-Man cosplayer and Lang were taken into custody. The cosplayer, identified as Keyssy Ayala Castro Figuero, set up a fundraising page to help cover his legal expenses and medical bills, claiming he was tackled and assaulted by police during the incident. The fundraiser has already garnered nearly $12,000 in support.
Since his pardon, Lang has accumulated a troubling record, including organizing an antisemitic rally in Washington D.C., where he performed Nazi salutes and shouted racial slurs. He has also been accused of vandalizing an anti-ICE ice sculpture and was arrested for making threats against basketball player Carmelo Anthony.
Minneapolis has been one of many cities recently impacted by a rise in anti-immigration ICE raids, leading to a series of protests. Federal officers have responded to these demonstrations with violence, resulting in the deaths of two protesters: Renée Good, shot by an ICE officer on January 7, and Alex Pretti, killed by Border Patrol agents on January 24. While the intensity of the raids has decreased, Minneapolis continues to be a focal point for cultural and social struggles.
