Critics Split on First Impressions of Ridley Scott’s Latest Action Sci-Fi Thriller
Ridley Scott’s latest venture into a post-apocalyptic world has sparked a mix of reactions among early viewers.
Initial feedback on The Dog Stars highlights the film’s stunning visuals, heartfelt performances, and its surprisingly human approach to a devastated world. However, some critics have pointed out its slow pacing, familiar narrative, and a screenplay that feels underdeveloped, suggesting that Scott’s direction outshines the material.
Certain viewers have lauded The Dog Stars for its intimate and emotionally resonant storytelling. Phil Roberts noted it as a “humble and emotionally weighted change of pace” for Scott, while Rob Sperduto described it as a “surprisingly optimistic and sincere post-apocalyptic neo-Western,” commending Jacob Elordi’s portrayal.
Conversely, other critics were less favorable. Matt Neglia argued that the screenplay diminishes Scott’s directorial strengths, while another outlet labeled the film a generic post-apocalyptic thriller, drawing comparisons to The Last of Us and 28 Days Later.
The divide in opinions seems to stem from differing expectations. Some appreciated the film’s slower, more emotional narrative, while others were hoping for a faster-paced action thriller typical of Ridley Scott.
Adapted from Peter Heller’s 2012 novel, The Dog Stars unfolds in the aftermath of a catastrophic pandemic that has decimated humanity. Elordi stars as Hig, a civilian pilot residing in a remote homestead with his dog and Bangley, a tough former Marine portrayed by Josh Brolin.
The duo has forged a tense alliance centered on survival, safeguarding their home, and seeking signs of life. However, when Hig intercepts a mysterious radio transmission, he ventures beyond the safety of their homestead in search of the source.
The novel received acclaim upon its release, becoming a New York Times bestseller and earning recognition as one of the best books of 2012 from various publications. This acclaim sets high expectations for Scott’s film adaptation.
The cast also features Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, Allison Janney, and Benedict Wong. Ridley Scott directs from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith, known for his work on The Revenant and American Primeval.
The Dog Stars is set to hit theaters on August 28.
