Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Unveils Reimagined Superboss Battles in Latest Trailer

Square Enix has unveiled exciting details about the boss battles in Final Fantasy 7 Revelation during Gamescom Opening Night Live. This eagerly awaited conclusion to the remake trilogy, which kicked off in 2020, is slated for release in spring 2027.

Game director Naoki Hamaguchi took the spotlight to share insights into the trilogy’s epic finale. The latest trailer showcased the formidable Weapons, the notoriously tough optional bosses from the original game. Rufus Shinra refers to them as “towering monstrosities termed weapons.” Viewers were treated to quick glimpses of Cloud and his allies confronting Emerald, Ruby, and Ultima Weapon. These encounters are set to be the most challenging in the game, featuring specific constraints, such as a 20-minute time limit for the Emerald Weapon battle unless players have a particular materia equipped. It will be fascinating to see how Revelation incorporates the distinct mechanics of each Weapon fight into its real-time combat system.

Earlier this year, during Summer Game Fest, the title of the trilogy’s third installment was officially revealed as Revelation. The reveal trailer hinted at new gameplay systems, including the ability to pilot the Highwind airship across Revelation’s expansive world. Players can seamlessly jump out of the airship and parachute to the ground, reminiscent of Fortnite. Familiar locations from Remake and Rebirth will return, alongside fresh areas like Wutai. Despite the addition of new environments, Hamaguchi reassured fans that Revelation will avoid the content bloat seen in Rebirth.

Voice actor Matt Mercer, who portrays Vincent Valentine, mentioned that the battle system has been “perfected” in Revelation. Both Vincent and Cid will finally join the party as playable characters. Hamaguchi noted that integrating Cid was particularly challenging, given his somewhat abrasive personality in the original game. Combat will also feature the trilogy’s toughest challenges, with players facing off against the menacing Weapons. The Gold Saucer makes a return as well, serving as a hub for more Queen’s Blood.

Regarding the series’ conclusion, Hamaguchi stated that the development team has remained steadfast in their vision and did not alter their plans based on player feedback. While the remake trilogy has reimagined events from the original, players are left wondering what surprises await in Revelation and whether Cloud and his friends can alter their fate.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is set to launch in Spring 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

The hope for a Vincent Valentine expansion remains strong.
