Donnie Darko Sequel Set to Arrive After 25 Years

Few films have sparked as much late-night speculation as *Donnie Darko*. Richard Kelly’s 2001 cult classic centers on Donnie, a troubled teen who starts experiencing visions of Frank, a mysterious figure in a creepy bunny suit who ominously warns him that the world will end in 28 days. The narrative unfolds through themes of time travel, alternate realities, and apocalyptic forewarnings, culminating in Donnie’s death and the apparent collapse of the tangent universe.

Even after multiple viewings, *Donnie Darko* remains a puzzle that’s tough to fully unravel — and anyone claiming to have it all figured out is likely not being truthful. This enigmatic quality is a big part of what has kept its fanbase so dedicated. Now, 25 years after its debut, Kelly is set to revisit that bizarre universe.

According to reports, writer-director Richard Kelly is gearing up to release a sequel book titled *The Philosophy of Time Travel* later this year. This roughly 800-page novel will be published by Range Literary Publishing and is anticipated to drop in the fourth quarter, coinciding with the film’s 25th anniversary.

The narrative picks up 14 months after Donnie’s demise and will be presented through found documents, including writings from the perspectives of Donnie’s parents, Rose and Eddie. The story will explore their attempts to comprehend what transpired with Donnie, the tangent universe, and the strange occurrences they collectively faced.

Kelly has reportedly dedicated the last decade to crafting this book, but he has been contemplating a potential *Donnie Darko* sequel for over 20 years. He mentioned that he spent years trying to develop a sequel film, but the storyline became too expansive and intricate to adapt easily for the screen.

His long-term vision is for the book to be the first step toward a broader series of sequels. He hopes that *The Philosophy of Time Travel* can eventually be transformed into an animated or motion-capture film, followed by a live-action movie set 28 years after the original. Kelly has also shown interest in reuniting the original cast, including Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

This timing also allows Kelly to reflect on the film as it nears its 25th anniversary. *Donnie Darko* initially faced challenges at the box office upon its 2001 release, but it later garnered a passionate following through home video, solidifying its status as a defining cult film of the early 2000s. The movie currently boasts an 88% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 71 Metascore.

The upcoming book won’t be the first effort to extend the *Donnie Darko* narrative. The 2009 direct-to-video film *S. Darko: A Donnie Darko Tale* followed Donnie’s younger sister, Samantha, but was produced without Kelly’s involvement and received largely negative reviews, holding a mere 13% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.
