Rockstar Games addresses the recent emotional fallout from GTA 6 leaks.
After over a week of persistent leaks surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6, Rockstar Games has publicly addressed the situation, describing the unauthorized gameplay reveals as “heartbreaking for our team” and expressing that this was not the way they intended for fans to experience the game after such a long wait. The leaks have continued, with new gameplay clips surfacing from what appears to be a playable version of the game. In their statement on social media, Rockstar also offered an unusual apology for not providing more official details up to this point.
This response comes just ahead of an anticipated official reveal of Grand Theft Auto 6, scheduled for Thursday during an “extended look” showcase on Netflix. Rockstar acknowledged that, even by their own standards, the wait for new information about the game has been unusually lengthy.
In addition to sharing the developers’ feelings after years of hard work, Rockstar apologized for not being able to communicate more directly with their fanbase.
Here’s the full statement from Rockstar Games:
Dear all,
We know that many of you have been waiting to hear from us regarding the events of the past week. It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time. We are very sorry that everything has taken as long as it has — from getting the game finished (nearly there!) to sharing more details and official gameplay, and providing the community with everything you want to know.
We are very excited for everyone to see the extended look tomorrow. It has taken longer than we wanted to get it ready, but as with everything we do, we know we need to exceed your expectations, and we are determined to deliver at the level you expect and deserve. While it is unfortunate that the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers, we hope that everyone will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19.
We want to thank everyone in the community who has reached out with messages of support this past week — your words have meant more to this team than you can imagine. Ultimately, we are making this game for you, and without you, we would not have the privilege of making games.
We look forward to sharing more with you soon.
Sincerely,
Rockstar Games
The latest wave of leaks for Grand Theft Auto 6 began on August 18, when a hacker known as Cyberleek started releasing previously unseen gameplay footage. So far, Rockstar has only unveiled two trailers for GTA 6—one in 2023 and another in 2025—along with a handful of screenshots showcasing characters and the game’s setting in Vice City, Leonida. The leaked clips have revealed various gameplay elements, including a basketball minigame, driving, flying, a nudist colony, and a tour of one of Leonida’s beaches. Additionally, glimpses of the game’s map have also surfaced.
Rockstar is working with Take-Two Interactive to identify the hacker, including efforts through U.S. federal court.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on November 19. “Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look” will premiere on Thursday, August 27, on Netflix, providing subscribers with an early glimpse of what to expect in GTA 6.
While Rockstar may be frustrated, the situation feels more like an insult than a significant injury.
