Experience the Ultimate Adventurer’s Fantasy in the New D&D Game
There’s a new Dungeons & Dragons experience on the horizon, and it’s not the much-anticipated action-adventure game showcased recently. You might wonder: what could be more exciting than playing a powerful warlock with an epic patron? How about running a cozy tavern for adventurers?
Developed by Homo Ludens, Dungeons & Dragons: Long Rest Tavern is a tavern simulation set in the Dalelands of the Forgotten Realms, slated for release on PC in 2027. Players will step into the shoes of an entrepreneur who revitalizes a rundown building, transforming it into a bustling tavern for the region’s adventurers. You’ll have the opportunity to expand and decorate your establishment, hire staff, and whip up delicious food and drink recipes, all while preparing for the evening rush. Keeping your adventurer patrons happy will allow you to send them on quests, rewarding you with rare ingredients for your culinary creations.
But Long Rest Tavern isn’t just about management. The developers are passionate D&D fans who recognize that the heart of the game lies in storytelling and lore. As you progress, you’ll uncover a larger narrative involving the ghost bard tied to your new tavern. Plus, you’ll get to interact with iconic characters from the Forgotten Realms, including the beloved ranger and his tiny space hamster companion, Minsc and Boo.
The gameplay loop consists of four main activities: expanding the tavern, crafting recipes, serving customers, and sending them on quests. This structure adds variety to the experience, and the gradual unveiling of the story will keep you engaged. While it may not be a traditional RPG where you control the adventurers during quests, the developers have incorporated D&D elements. Quests are resolved through a D20 roll against a set difficulty, with party composition and how well you’ve fed them providing bonuses. Choosing the right team for each quest will be essential for success.
It might seem unusual for a D&D game to stray from the RPG format. However, after speaking with game director David Ranineau during a hands-on preview, I was struck by his deep knowledge and enthusiasm for the tabletop game. These qualities shine through in Long Rest Tavern, which is packed with flavorful text and lore references that will resonate with dedicated D&D fans. For instance, a certain notorious writer/traveler/guide, who also appears in another popular title, will pen a review of your tavern, so you’ll want to ensure your service is top-notch.
