Danganronpa 2×2 Switch 2 Pre-Orders Halted Due to Shift to Game-Key Card Format

Danganronpa 2×2, the highly anticipated remake of the 2012 murder mystery, is halting pre-orders for physical Switch 2 versions. Developer Spike Chunsoft has announced that the game will now be released on game-key cards due to “unavoidable reasons.”

While the specifics behind this decision remain unclear, those who pre-ordered the physical editions, including the special Psycho Tropical Vacation Package, can expect an email confirming the cancellation of their pre-orders. If you’re still interested in the game-key card version, pre-orders are now available. Pre-orders made through other retailers will not be affected and will include a game-key copy when they arrive at your door in 2027. The company stated that this “decision was not taken lightly and follows careful consideration,” but they have no further details to share at this moment.

This news adds a layer of intrigue, as game-key cards have sparked debate among Switch 2 users. Unlike traditional cartridges, these cards do not contain the game itself; instead, they serve as a means to verify a digital license for download and play. Nintendo has also started using this model for some of its titles, including Pokémon Pokopial. Despite the mixed feelings, it seems players are adapting and purchasing them.

Originally slated for a 2026 release, Danganronpa 2×2 faced a delay announced during Anime Expo in July. This remake not only revisits the original 2012 storyline but also introduces a new “Slayhem” route featuring alternate narratives with fresh killers and victims in its murder mysteries.
