GTA 6 Will Reintroduce San Andreas’ Weight Mechanics, Rockstar Confirms
New details have emerged about Grand Theft Auto 6, and this time, they come from an in-depth interview with Rockstar Games rather than a leaked clip. Excitingly, the beloved weight and muscle system from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is making a comeback.
In a recent interview shared on August 26, multiple developers from Rockstar discussed various aspects of GTA 6. We got insights into the intricate relationship between Jason and Lucia, as well as how characters will respond to player actions, like brandishing a weapon. However, the standout revelation is that players will have the opportunity to hit the gym to bulk up or indulge in fast food to gain weight.
According to the interview, both Jason and Lucia will physically change based on player choices and dietary habits. Overindulging will lead to weight gain, while regular workouts will help them shed pounds and build muscle. The second official GTA 6 trailer even shows Jason working out, likely enhancing his muscle mass.
The developers also noted that neglecting sleep, evading the police, or going on extended benders will affect both characters’ appearances. This system seems to expand on the mechanics seen in Red Dead Redemption 2, where players could accumulate bruises or grow beards based on their grooming habits. This level of character customization hasn’t been seen in a GTA title since San Andreas in 2004.
With these visual feedback mechanisms, deep relationship dynamics, and heightened realism, players might think twice before engaging in the chaotic rampages typical of previous GTA games when they step into Leonida, as suggested in the interview.
Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, mentioned, “We look back at our previous games with a critical eye and see where we want to evolve based on what we didn’t do as well as we would have liked to. A lot of what we do is very iterative – we adjust a lot of things by feel based on what is working and what isn’t.”
Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to launch on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox. Additionally, on August 27, Rockstar will unveil the first official gameplay footage of GTA 6 on Netflix.
