Disney Takes Notice of Kingdom Hearts Again

Kingdom Hearts is gearing up for an exciting year with the upcoming animated series on Disney+ and the highly anticipated launch of Kingdom Hearts IV set for late 2027. Since its debut in 2002, the franchise has raked in over a billion dollars, prompting Disney to want more adventures featuring Sora, Riku, and Kairi. However, with the series’ intricate narrative seemingly approaching a climax, is Disney’s desire to expand the Kingdom Hearts universe a cause for concern?

In a recent interview, Disney’s director of games, Nana Gadd, expressed that there’s still plenty of potential for the collaboration with Square Enix’s beloved crossover. She emphasized that the animated series is merely the beginning of their plans.

“Even though Kingdom Hearts has been around for 25 years, there are so many things we want to do,” Gadd stated. “The announcement of the animated series is truly just the first step.”

As a fan of Kingdom Hearts, I can’t help but feel a bit anxious. The series has been carefully crafting its notoriously convoluted storyline, and the idea of Disney treating it as a never-ending resource raises some red flags. This concern is amplified by Disney’s recent track record of overextending its franchises, as seen with the mixed reception of live-action remakes and the saturation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars.

Translation:

“We’ve mishandled Star Wars, people are growing weary of the MCU, and our live-action remakes are not well-received. Let’s see if we can stretch Kingdom Hearts thin and tarnish the last cherished property we have.”

Disney investing more in Kingdom Hearts? Absolutely.

Disney taking more creative control over Kingdom Hearts? Please, no.

Fund Square, give Nomura’s team the resources they need, and let them work their magic. Disney’s history is exactly why they should limit their creative input.

“Kingdom Hearts: The Anime, Kingdom Hearts: The Movie, Kingdom Hearts: The Game Show that’s just Legends of the Hidden Temple, Kingdom Hearts: The Breakfast Cereal, Kingdom Hearts: The Coloring Book, Kingdom Hearts: The FLAMETHROWER,” joked a fan on Reddit.

“Disney is about to do too much, aren’t they?” another user questioned.

“It’s giving me Star Wars vibes,” remarked a third. “Bloat doesn’t equal quality. I hope there’s genuine love for the franchise, but I fear it might be exploited.”

On a brighter note, there’s some speculation about the possibility of Kingdom Hearts getting a dedicated feature in a Disney park. Imagine a Sora and Riku meet-and-greet with real actors instead of the awkward Sora costume from years past—it could be a fun experience!
