Fable Combat Clip Sparks Controversy Over Graphics Quality, But There’s More to the Story
A brief gameplay clip from the upcoming Fable reboot, set to release early next year on Xbox, PC, and PS5, is making waves online, but not in the way developer Playground Games might have hoped. A short video showcasing the main character swinging a sword at a large enemy, with minimal response from the foe, is circulating as evidence of poor combat mechanics. However, as is often the case with viral content, the reality is more nuanced.
On August 26, during Gamescom, Xbox unveiled a new gameplay video of Fable. This nearly 20-minute showcase features the hero embarking on quests, exploring the world of Albion, and battling various enemies. Yet, a 60-second segment from this extensive video has gained traction on platforms like Reddit and Twitter.
On Twitter, the clip was shared with the caption “Fable’s combat” accompanied by a dubious emoji. It has garnered close to 3 million views in just 24 hours, depicting the protagonist repeatedly attacking an enemy that seems to absorb the blows with little reaction, making the encounter appear tedious. This same clip also gained significant attention on Reddit, amassing over 5,000 upvotes and a slew of negative comments. The backlash prompted some users to share longer combat clips to demonstrate that Fable’s combat isn’t as lackluster as the viral snippet suggests.
And while the clip in question doesn’t present the game in the best light, it’s essential to consider the context. The enemy featured isn’t just any foe; it’s a mini-boss designed to be particularly challenging, boasting more health than standard enemies. Additionally, the gameplay video was set to a higher difficulty level, which likely accounts for the mini-boss’s resilience. The viral clip also suffers from a slower, less stable framerate compared to the smoother gameplay showcased in the full video.
Moreover, the viral segment omits the hero’s encounters with smaller, weaker enemies prior to facing the mini-boss, which display much more engaging combat, with enemies reacting appropriately and going down after a few hits.
To be fair, even at normal speed, the boss fight in the new Fable video does leave something to be desired. A boss should exhibit more reaction to hits, and the amount of health for such a straightforward moveset seems excessive. However, this clip doesn’t accurately represent the overall combat experience in the Fable reboot. Other footage reveals a wider array of moves, more responsive enemies, and a faster-paced, more fluid action than what’s shown in that 60-second viral clip.
This situation serves as a reminder that much of social media content is designed to drive engagement, often by provoking strong reactions or sharing negative impressions. While it’s possible that Fable’s combat could fall short, a 60-second clip lacking context and running at a lower framerate doesn’t provide a comprehensive view of the game. We won’t truly know if the combat is exhilarating or tedious until reviewers and players get their hands on Fable in February of next year.
So, until then, don’t let isolated social media clips sway your opinion about a game’s quality.
