GTA 6’s Vice City Map Is Three Times the Size of Red Dead Redemption 2, Making It Rockstar’s Largest Yet
Players often joke about never finishing Red Dead Redemption 2 due to its incredible detail and depth, making it a monumental task. The expansive story and gameplay spread across one of the largest maps in gaming only heighten the challenge. So, good luck with Grand Theft Auto 6, as the entire map is reportedly three times larger than its predecessor.
This scale was confirmed to a YouTuber during a recent preview at Rockstar North. “[Head of development Rob Nelson] threw some figures at me,” the YouTuber recounted. “The map is twice the size of GTA 5’s map, three times the size of Red Dead 2’s map. Vice City itself is twice the size of Los Santos. And when you include Vice City and its surrounding suburbs, it’s 11 times bigger than Los Santos and its surroundings, which is just insane.”
The latest gameplay reveal showcases this vastness, particularly in a scene where one of the protagonists, Lucia, gazes over a sprawling cityscape on a sunny day before skydiving off a skyscraper. We’ve also seen the characters engaging in activities like jet skiing, kayaking, and riding airboats. Leaked footage has even shown what it’s like to soar in airplanes above the expansive map.
While Rockstar’s maps may not be the largest in gaming, they often set the standard for the most dense, polished, and interactive open-world experiences. Size alone doesn’t guarantee success; it’s all about how that space is utilized. We’ve seen the pitfalls of vast but empty worlds, like those in Starfield. If GTA 6 can fill its enormous world with unforgettable moments, it will be nothing short of remarkable and potentially overwhelming.
