Original director shares exciting news about Jason Statham’s upcoming action film.

Director David Ayer collaborated with Jason Statham on two high-octane films, The Beekeeper (2024) and A Working Man (2025). A sequel to The Beekeeper is in the works, but Ayer won’t be at the helm this time. In a recent interview, he expressed his curiosity about the sequel’s direction, although he hasn’t had the chance to see it yet.

The Beekeeper was a standout entry in Statham’s action repertoire, featuring a gripping revenge narrative that sets it apart. With a cast of quirky villains, including pesky cryptobros, and a sweet elderly woman seeking justice, Statham’s character emerges from retirement more formidable than ever. The script, penned by Kurt Wimmer, is packed with clever bee puns, while Ayer brought his experience from military-themed action films to the project.

The story of The Beekeeper felt like it had more to offer even as the credits rolled, so the announcement of a sequel was hardly surprising. However, fans should expect a different tone in this continuation, as both the original director and writer have been replaced. Timo Tjahjanto, known for his work on The Night Comes for Us and The Shadow Strays, will direct The Beekeeper 2, with Umair Aleem stepping in as the writer.

The first film featured some jaw-dropping moments, including a scene where Statham’s character, Adam Clay, ties up a man whose fingers he previously severed and tosses him off a bridge. Fans can anticipate more intense sequences in The Beekeeper 2, as Tjahjanto is recognized for his gory action style. A first look revealed that Clay will use a flamethrower in a particularly brutal scene.

When asked for an update on The Beekeeper 2, Ayer admitted he hasn’t seen it yet but expressed his excitement and confidence in the film, praising Statham as an exceptional actor.

While production is likely still underway, it’s expected to wrap up soon, with The Beekeeper 2 scheduled for release on January 15, 2027, two years after the original.
