Dragon Ball Super Manga Set for Official Comeback After Over Two-Year Hiatus

Since the passing of the iconic manga artist Akira Toriyama in 2024, the beloved Dragon Ball manga has been on pause. The most recent chapter, Dragon Ball Super, started its run in Shueisha’s V Jump magazine back in 2015. While the future of the manga has been uncertain for a while, a recent post from the series’ illustrator, Toyotarou, has sparked excitement among fans about a potential comeback.

On August 5, a user shared a heartwarming story about asking their 7-year-old son what he wanted to do for summer vacation. The child replied, “I want to tell Toyotarou-san from Dragon Ball Super to draw more manga!” Toyotarou responded with, “Thank you. I got it.” Although this charming exchange happened earlier in the month, V Jump recently shared it again, hinting that the manga might be gearing up for a return. Toyotarou has been involved in various Dragon Ball projects over the years, illustrating Dragon Ball Super and several adaptations of video games and anime, while Toriyama provided the writing and feedback on his storyboards.

So far, Toyotarou’s entire manga career has revolved around Dragon Ball. In an interview, he mentioned that he never planned to become a manga artist but landed the role after showcasing his Dragon Ball-themed portfolio to Shueisha. He initially worked on the art for the Dragon Ball Heroes card game, which led to a close collaboration with Toriyama.

While the future of the Dragon Ball Super manga remains unconfirmed, there are several anime projects in the pipeline. Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, a revamped version of this arc with fresh animation, is set to release this fall. Following that, Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol will adapt the corresponding arc from the manga. There are still numerous manga arcs, like Moro and Granolah, that have yet to be adapted. Additionally, fans can look forward to the upcoming action RPG Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 and an apparently unauthorized $7 billion amusement park in France.

New anime and a remake are confirmed in production at Dragon Ball Genkidamatsuri.
