Rust Unveils Major Overhaul for 2026 Development Plans
Even after eight years since its early access launch, Rust continues to receive regular updates from developer Facepunch. This survival game demands a significant time investment from players, especially with each monthly wipe, prompting the team to consistently introduce new content to keep the experience fresh. At the beginning of the year, Facepunch unveiled a roadmap outlining their plans for 2026.
Recently, however, a stealth update to the roadmap revealed that several planned features have either been removed or postponed to 2027.
As we approach the final quarter of 2026, Facepunch has reassessed its objectives for the year, resulting in some changes to the roadmap. Notably, the Battle Pass, which was initially slated for release in the third quarter, has been scrapped in favor of focusing on monument improvements and revamping the clan system. Many players welcomed this decision, feeling that Rust isn’t suited for cosmetic rewards tied to paid subscriptions. The Battle Pass entry has now been entirely replaced with “Rust Premium.”
Players with over $15 worth of inventory items in Rust qualify for Rust Premium status, granting them access to dedicated servers that are less likely to be plagued by cheaters with empty inventories. While the specifics of how Facepunch plans to enhance Rust Premium remain unclear, there is hope for exciting features and exclusive cosmetics in the future.
Several features, including procedural caves, the nexus system, the nomadic dweller, improved underground terrain, the grappling hook, and terrain deformation, have been pushed back to next year. However, the much-anticipated animal husbandry update is expected to launch before the year’s end, alongside player customization, a bug reward system, and biofuel generators. In a pleasant surprise, one of the previous stretch goals—pet dogs—has been moved up and is now anticipated for release in 2026.
Reactions to these roadmap changes will vary among players, and while it’s uncertain how much they will impact each wipe, it’s encouraging to see the team dedicated to enhancing Rust continuously. With the September force wipe just around the corner, players are eager for more details in an upcoming blog post before the monthly update.
Rust is available on Mac, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
This month’s Rust update introduces two DLC packs and changes that are sure to shake up the current wipe.
