Experience the beauty of the Appalachian Trail in the stunning adventure game, A Trail Tale.
I used to be a passionate hiker, hitting the trails for backpacking trips a few times each year. Thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail was always a dream of mine, but life had other plans. (It turns out that jobs, family, and responsibilities don’t exactly support the idea of vanishing for three months.) Recently, I felt the urge to reconnect with nature and took my kids on their first camping adventure. That’s when I stumbled upon A Trail Tale, which came at the perfect moment. This interactive trail journal, crafted by Andy Moliski with his brothers Adam and Alex, offers a unique experience.
The trail segments are beautifully illustrated in pixel art, reminiscent of classic ‘90s point-and-click adventures. Alex composed a stunning original soundtrack that blends nature sounds with acoustic guitar, strings, and even some clarinet melodies.
As you navigate through each day, you’ll find information about various landmarks and a game-like interface inspired by classics like Oregon Trail. (Don’t worry—no one dies of dysentery here.) Clicking on Andy reveals a menu filled with icons that provide insights into his journey, mental state, and even snippets of poetry. There are also icons representing factors that affect his fortitude and morale, such as bad weather or breathtaking views.
It’s incredibly easy to lose track of time while exploring Andy’s adventure. It’s got me thinking about getting back out there and tackling more of the Appalachian Trail myself.
