The Witcher 4 is set for a physical release despite its 2028 launch date.

CD Projekt has announced that a physical edition of The Witcher 4 is on the way, even though the RPG is set to launch after Sony halts the production of physical games for the PlayStation 5.

Sony plans to cease the manufacturing of game discs for its consoles in January 2028. The Witcher 4 stands out as the most notable AAA title expected to debut that year, coming from a studio known for its commitment to physical releases. In a recent interview, CD Projekt’s joint CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed the studio’s intention to offer a physical version of The Witcher 4.

“We’re big fans of people having access to tangible collectible things. We’re nerds ourselves, and we like that. We always supported that,” Nowakowski stated. “So, whatever happens, we’re definitely going to have a box. It’s going to include some extras that you’ll want to open and enjoy.”

However, Nowakowski expressed uncertainty about whether the game will actually be available on a disc, as CD Projekt cannot dictate Sony’s manufacturing decisions. “We know what PlayStation has announced. And we have no influence on the policies of the first parties,” he noted. “The discs for the first parties, including PlayStation, have to be produced in their own factories. So, if they stop manufacturing by 2028, then yes, we won’t have a disc.”

Despite acknowledging the lack of control over disc production for The Witcher 4, it’s reassuring that CD Projekt is committed to a physical release. Nonetheless, it’s evident that PlayStation needs to clarify its plans to developers, as there is still a clear demand for physical discs.

The Witcher 4 is set to launch on PS5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X sometime in 2028. In the meantime, fans can look forward to a current-generation remaster of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on September 29, along with the Songs of the Past expansion for that game expected in 2027.

“It’s easier to scale up than down.”
