Steven Spielberg’s divisive film set for a significant 4K release this fall.

Steven Spielberg has dedicated over fifty years to filmmaking, crafting a collection of iconic movies that have woven themselves into the cultural landscape. Classics like Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, and Schindler’s List have solidified Spielberg’s status as one of Hollywood’s most influential directors.

Even after all this time, Spielberg’s films continue to attract new fans through theatrical re-releases, streaming platforms, and enhanced home video editions. However, not every film in his extensive catalog has received universal praise.

One of his most polarizing works is set for a significant re-release this fall, offering fans a chance to revisit one of his most unique and ambitious family films.

That film is Hook, Spielberg’s 1991 take on J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan, featuring Robin Williams as an adult Peter Pan and Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook. To mark the film’s 35th anniversary, a limited-edition 4K Ultra HD SteelBook of Hook will be available on November 17.

This new edition boasts a restoration from the original camera negative in 4K with Dolby Vision, complemented by English Dolby Atmos audio. However, the real highlight for dedicated fans may be the array of new and archival bonus content. Included is Hook: Never Never Ending, a brand-new, hour-long documentary showcasing never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage, interviews with Spielberg, Williams, Hoffman, and Julia Roberts, as well as glimpses of the crew in action and even some of Spielberg’s personal home movies.

The story of Hook kicks off with Peter Banning (Robin Williams), a successful lawyer consumed by work, who has lost touch with the carefree boy he once was. His life takes a dramatic turn when Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman) kidnaps his children, compelling Peter to return to Neverland and confront a past he has forgotten.

In Neverland, Peter must rediscover the imagination and wonder of his childhood if he hopes to rescue his kids from Hook. The film blends Spielberg’s signature adventurous spirit with a more sentimental interpretation of the Peter Pan legend.

This is where the film’s reputation becomes complex.

Hook was a box-office hit upon its release in 1991, yet critics were less enthusiastic. The film garnered five Academy Award nominations, including Best Visual Effects, but its reception has remained mixed over the years.

For many viewers, Hook is a nostalgic favorite, filled with unforgettable performances and intricate sets. Conversely, some feel that its sprawling narrative and sentimental tone fall short of Spielberg’s finest work. This divide has become part of the film’s legacy, transforming what was once seen as one of Spielberg’s lesser films into a beloved classic for those who grew up with it—making the 35th anniversary release a perfect opportunity to revisit Neverland.
