Halloween: The Game Canceled for PS5 Release in Japan Over Content Concerns

Following the cancellation of its release in Australia due to in-game drug content, it has now been confirmed that Halloween: The Game will also not be launching on PS5 in Japan.

An official statement from the game’s social media account revealed that the title could not secure an age rating from Japan’s CERO (Computer Entertainment Rating Organization), which has blocked its planned release on the console in that region. The development team expressed their reluctance to modify the game’s content to meet the agency’s requirements, although it will still be available on Xbox and PC as scheduled.

“Unfortunately, our rating for PlayStation has been cancelled in Japan due to our inability to obtain a domestic rating from CERO for the title’s visceral violence and nudity,” the team stated. “We have determined that altering the content to achieve compliance would significantly compromise the original film’s vision and prevent us from delivering the gameplay experience that players expect.”

The reason the game can still launch on PC and Xbox despite the lack of a CERO rating is tied to the legal framework surrounding these ratings. CERO ratings are mandatory for physical game releases, but they are optional for digital-only titles, which can utilize the internationally recognized IARC ratings. While all platforms, including PlayStation, acknowledge IARC ratings in Japan, Sony requires CERO ratings for any game classified as 18+ by IARC, which is what prevents Halloween: The Game from being released on their console.

Japan enforces strict regulations regarding full-frontal nudity and gore across all media through CERO, often leading to other titles, such as Resident Evil: Requiem, being toned down compared to their international versions. With the team opting not to modify the game for the Japanese market, it will now only be available on Xbox and PC as originally planned on September 9th.
