Sony Implements Anti-Harassment Policy for Customers, Enforcing Legal Consequences for Violations

As Sony navigates the backlash from its announcement to discontinue physical PlayStation discs by 2028, the company has rolled out a new anti-harassment policy aimed at safeguarding its customer service staff.

This policy, detailed on Sony’s Japanese website, is designed to uphold the “dignity and safety” of customer service employees who have faced harassment and unreasonable demands. Examples of harassment include persistent requests for compensation and apologies, abusive language, threats, unrelated inquiries, intimidation, and any form of discriminatory or sexual conduct. Additionally, visiting Sony offices without permission is also considered harassment.

In response to such behavior, Sony may limit customer service interactions with offending users and could pursue legal action if deemed necessary.

It’s unfortunate that these employees, who are simply there to assist with troubleshooting PS5 issues, often bear the brunt of frustration from dissatisfied customers. Many of these customers are venting their anger at individuals who have no control over corporate decisions, such as the controversial statement that “in the digital age, it is not plausible to allege that reasonable consumers believed they were obtaining ‘ownership’ of a digital game.” This situation is exacerbated by some individuals failing to recognize that customer service representatives are not equipped to resolve issues that are far beyond their scope.

PlayStation enthusiasts are actively voicing their concerns about the shift away from physical discs through various means, including a proposed class action lawsuit, a planned “blackout” week to refrain from using PlayStation products, and a steady stream of critical comments across YouTube videos, livestreams, and social media platforms. Regardless of Sony’s business rationale, the outcome is a diminishing sense of choice, ownership, and control for players regarding how they purchase games, as the company tightens its grip on PlayStation game distribution.
