Major Mod Platform Acquires Key Access to Steam
Nexus Mods, the leading platform for video game modding, has announced its acquisition of SteamDB, a third-party service that tracks Steam player counts and databases, for an undisclosed amount. The platform reassured users that SteamDB will retain its name, brand, community, and identity, even as its original owner, xPaw, steps back due to burnout and the impact of AI on his passion for the project.
In statements from both Nexus Mods and SteamDB, it appears the ownership transition is already underway. Nexus Mods confirmed that xPaw will remain involved for the next few months to ensure a seamless handover.
xPaw candidly shared that the increasing mental burden of managing SteamDB alone led him to seek a partner who could uphold the legacy he created. He expressed that the post-COVID landscape and the rise of AI diminished his enthusiasm for the project, contributing to his burnout. Despite his efforts to find a suitable successor in the past, he ultimately decided to continue solo until Nexus Mods stepped in.
Victor “Foledinho” Folmann, the new owner of Nexus Mods, highlighted the immense value of SteamDB’s extensive archive of game manifests and data. He noted that mods often rely on specific game versions, and updates can disrupt previously functioning mods. SteamDB’s comprehensive tracking of game builds, depots, manifests, and update histories offers a wealth of historical data that can enhance modding reliability.
Folmann emphasized the importance of stewardship in maintaining a resource that the community relies on, echoing xPaw’s sentiments about the need for a responsible team. He expressed gratitude for being chosen to carry SteamDB forward and acknowledged the responsibility to honor that trust.
