A New Era for Monster Hunter is on the Horizon
Monster Hunter Wilds is set to undergo some major transformations next year with the arrival of the Ascendance expansion, which Capcom has touted as a “massive” update. This DLC will introduce a brand-new region known as the Eastlands, along with a fresh roster of monsters to hunt, including elder dragons. However, the standout feature is an innovative mechanic called Boost Bracer that could significantly alter the game’s pace.
An overview video has been released to demonstrate the functionality of Boost Bracer, and many players are drawing comparisons to Nero’s combat style in Devil May Cry. Players can accumulate Boost Bracer energy by maintaining an aggressive playstyle, filling a meter displayed at the bottom of the screen. Once enough energy is gathered, a Boost Driver attack can be executed to activate Boost, a mode that enhances existing attacks and introduces new moves. Essentially, while in Boost mode, every weapon becomes more effective: dual blades gain speed, shields become sturdier, and the bow features a stagger-inducing finisher.
All 14 weapon types will receive new abilities tied to Boost, and Capcom is rolling out videos that detail the updates for each weapon. For instance, the Greatsword has a dedicated video showcasing its ability to chain offset counters, allowing players to handle multiple powerful attacks in succession. Moreover, this already formidable weapon is set to deliver even more damage, with the Boosted Greatsword capable of landing stagger after stagger.
The community’s reaction to Boost Bracer has been largely positive, with fans thrilled by the stylish and satisfying execution of these new moves. However, a small segment of players is concerned that this high-octane system may drift the game away from the series’ more methodical roots.
While most critics have praised Monster Hunter Wilds, long-time fans of the series have had mixed feelings. Many players expressed dissatisfaction with the increased emphasis on cutscenes and narrative over the core experience of battling monsters with powerful weapons. Additionally, some felt that the base game was too easy, making Hunters feel overpowered compared to earlier titles. Given that the new system essentially grants every weapon rocket-propelled attacks, it’s understandable that some are worried this could exacerbate the issue.
It’s hoped that Ascendance will significantly bolster enemy monsters to balance things out. We’ll find out how these substantial changes unfold when the expansion launches next year.
A trip above the clouds.
