New Report Suggests StarCraft 3 Could Be in the Works
In 2016, Blizzard Entertainment launched the last DLC for StarCraft 2, and since then, the franchise has been largely quiet, aside from a remaster of the original game in 2017. However, recent reports suggest that the long wait for a new installment might be coming to an end, with whispers of StarCraft 3 potentially in development.
The interesting twist is that this new entry may not be crafted by Blizzard itself. According to a report from a Korean newspaper, Nexon is in discussions with Blizzard to secure the rights to create a sequel in the StarCraft universe. An unnamed senior gaming industry source indicated that this deal is “on the verge of being finalized,” which could mean Nexon is set to kick off development on StarCraft 3.
StarCraft remains a highly influential series worldwide, particularly in Korea, where it boasts a substantial casual and competitive following. Nexon, based in Korea, has a solid partnership with Blizzard, having recently acquired the publishing rights for Overwatch on PC in the region.
However, there’s a possibility that Nexon might not be working on a traditional real-time strategy game. Earlier this year, another report suggested that Blizzard and Nexon were collaborating on a shooter set in the StarCraft universe, which could potentially revive the long-canceled StarCraft: Ghost. It’s uncertain if this project is the same shooter mentioned by a reporter in 2024, which was reportedly being led by a former Far Cry director.
If Nexon and Blizzard are indeed finalizing a deal related to StarCraft, an announcement could be made during BlizzCon 2026, with rumors hinting at a potential reveal. This follows a surprise update for StarCraft 2 released in June that significantly altered the game’s meta.
Major announcements regarding StarCraft and other Blizzard titles like World of Warcraft and Overwatch are expected during the BlizzCon opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m. PDT on September 12. The event will be streamed on Blizzard’s official YouTube channel.
Blizzard seems poised for a strong year in 2026, but there’s more to the story than meets the eye.
