Cult-Favorite Japanese Thriller’s Development Resumes Following Funding Issues and Hospitalization

The development of Shibuya Scramble Stories, the anticipated sequel to the cult classic visual novel 428: Shibuya Scramble, seems to be back on track after a series of challenges, thanks to a recent presentation that highlighted new gameplay while the team navigates ongoing legal issues.

The journey of Shibuya Scramble Stories has been almost as thrilling as the game itself, set against the vibrant backdrop of Tokyo. Initially, the game generated significant buzz among Japanese fans, raising 55 million yen (around $340k) on a crowdfunding platform, only to face a setback when the funds were mistakenly sent to the wrong account, resulting in the loss of half the promised amount. A legal dispute over the missing funds is still in progress.

To address this financial hiccup, the team initiated a new crowdfunding campaign to recover the lost money, successfully raising 436 percent of their goal of 10 million yen, totaling 43 million yen (approximately $260k). However, the project faced another hurdle when lead director Jiro Ishii had to be hospitalized.

Despite these challenges, the ensemble narrative featuring five characters from diverse backgrounds caught up in a city-threatening plot is back on course. Recent gameplay showcased at an event in Shibuya indicates that fans of the original 428 will find themselves in familiar territory with this new installment.

The cast includes well-known actors along with two new characters portrayed by influencer Namae wa Mada Nai and professional wrestler Unagi Sayaka. This blend of drama and absurdity is evident, as the former plays a college student with journalistic aspirations, while the latter is part of a quirky Banana Cult.

The announcement also coincided with additional crowdfunding efforts aimed at introducing more characters, as the team detailed how the funds raised so far are being utilized while they continue to seek recovery of the withheld amounts. According to reports, the footage presented at the event was filmed in collaboration with the owners of the Tokyu building at Shibuya Scramble Crossing, ensuring full access and support for the shoot, which will extend into the final game as official project supporters.

The original 428: Shibuya Scramble remains a cherished title from the 2000s, celebrated for its innovative blend of live-action photography and a narrative that serves as a time capsule of Shibuya during its development. While the journey so far highlights the risks and uncertainties of crowdfunding, the unwavering support has enabled the team to persevere, shaping the game into something truly distinctive.
