Ethan Hawke and Scott Derrickson are collaborating on a new horror film following Black Phone 2.
Ethan Hawke and Scott Derrickson have teamed up to create some unforgettable horror experiences, and it seems they might be gearing up for another chilling project.
Their collaboration kicked off with *Sinister*, the 2012 horror flick where Hawke portrayed a true-crime author who uncovers something horrifying while researching his latest book. Nearly a decade later, they joined forces again for *The Black Phone*, with Hawke stepping into the menacing role of the Grabber, while Derrickson returned to helm its upcoming sequel, *Black Phone 2*.
In a recent chat about his new film *The Weight*—a thriller set during the Great Depression where Hawke plays a father who embarks on a perilous gold-smuggling journey to find his daughter—he was asked if he had any plans to dive back into horror. His response was intriguingly vague: “yeah.”
“I don’t have agendas like that about what kind of movie, really. I like people,” Hawke shared. “Yeah, Scott and I are working on something right now. I think he’s so gifted. I like working with him.”
While Hawke didn’t reveal specifics about their current project, it raises an exciting question for horror enthusiasts: Are they revisiting one of their previous nightmares, or is something entirely fresh on the horizon?
The most likely candidate is *Black Phone 3*. The sequel, *Black Phone 2*, resurrected Hawke’s Grabber and deepened the supernatural lore of the series, receiving a warm reception from critics. There’s definitely more ground to cover, especially after the sequel hinted that the Grabber’s influence could reach far beyond his initial reign of terror.
However, it’s worth noting that both Derrickson and writer C. Robert Cargill were cautious about confirming a third installment when *Black Phone 2* debuted last year. In an interview at Fantastic Fest, Derrickson mentioned they hadn’t even discussed *Black Phone 3*, while Cargill emphasized the need for a compelling idea to justify revisiting those characters.
Then there’s *Sinister*, the film that marked the beginning of Hawke and Derrickson’s horror partnership. Hawke starred as true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt in the original but did not return for the 2015 sequel, *Sinister 2*, which was directed by Ciarán Foy and received a dismal 14% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Of course, it’s also possible that they are crafting an entirely new narrative. For now, fans will have to stay tuned to see what this dynamic duo has planned.
*The Weight* hits theaters on September 18.
