PlayStation State of Play Chat Buzzes with Demands for Destiny 3 and ‘No Disc, No Buy’ Stance

Frustrated fans of Sony have turned out in droves for the company’s latest State of Play showcase, marking the first major event since the announcement of the end of new PlayStation game discs. The chat rooms on YouTube and Twitch were flooded with calls for the PS5 maker to develop Destiny 3 and to keep physical gaming alive.

During the showcase, Twitch was filled with “D3” emotes, while YouTube echoed with chants of “no disc, no buy.” These demands have become rallying cries for fans discontented with Sony’s recent business decisions, reflecting broader dissatisfaction with this console generation, which has seen price hikes and a significant focus on the live-service gaming trend.

Sony’s choice to phase out physical games with the upcoming PS6 has intensified these frustrations, providing players their first chance to voice their concerns during a major PlayStation event since the July announcement. This comes on the heels of a recent attempt by some to initiate a week-long boycott of the platform.

As of now, Sony has not indicated any intention to reverse its decisions regarding Bungie or the future of Destiny 2, nor has it shown any signs of reinstating game disc production. “We put in a lot of thought and time, and we cautiously considered this—and we came to this conclusion, and we’re going to cautiously move this forward,” said the chief financial officer during the last earnings call. “We have received various opinions, and people have strong views, and we understand that the community has put forth those views to us.”

She added, “Games are loved by many people. It’s a form of entertainment that’s cherished, often tied to fond memories. We understand those emotions and want to consider them. In the future digital ecosystem, how we engage with gamers is something we would like to continue to explore.”

A month later, it seems that perspective hasn’t shifted, and the chats on PlayStation’s YouTube and Twitch channels are ensuring the company remains aware of the community’s sentiments.
