Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Set for Physical Release, But with a Major Caveat
During a surprise appearance at the Berlin Fan Fest for Final Fantasy 14, Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, expressed his intention to release the finale of the remake trilogy on physical media. With the game set to launch on April 8, 2027, we now know that a physical edition is indeed on the way. However, Square Enix has made some notable compromises.
An official press release from Square Enix disclosed that the physical edition of Revelation will come on a single disc but will require an internet connection to download additional game data for full playability. This is an improvement over some recent physical editions that only provide a digital redemption code (looking at you, Grand Theft Auto 6). In the past, Square Enix has offered true physical releases for the remake trilogy, with both Remake and Rebirth featuring multi-disc cases that allowed players to access the game without needing an internet connection. While having one disc is better than none, the requirement for online access is a disappointing change as the trilogy reaches its conclusion.
Additionally, the physical edition for the Switch 2 will include a Game-Key card.
In terms of options, there are several editions of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation available for players, each offering unique perks. The Standard Edition is priced at $69.99 and includes either a special Magic: The Gathering card at select retailers or a folded poster when purchased through Amazon. The physical Deluxe Edition costs $99.99 and comes with a mini-soundtrack, an artbook, and a steelbook case. The digital Premium Edition is also $99.99 and includes the Story Expansion Pass along with 24-hour early access to the game. The Premium Plus Edition, priced at $109.99, includes everything from the Premium Edition plus the digital soundtrack, artbook, and several in-game items. There’s also the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Series Trilogy Edition for $84.99, which grants immediate access to Remake and Rebirth for those who digitally pre-order.
The priciest option is the $349.99 physical Collector’s Edition, exclusive to the Square Enix store. This edition includes all the features of the Deluxe Edition, along with the Story Expansion Pass and a selection of exclusive in-game items. The highlight is a premium statue featuring Cloud, Zack, and Sephiroth standing back-to-back. Given that it costs less than most consoles these days, the Collector’s Edition almost feels like a steal. Almost.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is set to launch on April 8, 2027, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
