Naughty Dog Moves Away from The Last of Us Season 3, Teases Upcoming Projects

It’s been over a year since Neil Druckmann, the director of the Last of Us series, stepped away from the live-action HBO adaptation, leaving it in the hands of showrunner Craig Mazin. Thankfully, the show is set to conclude after its third season instead of dragging things out into a proposed fourth. Druckmann, however, isn’t involved in the upcoming season, which stars Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, so he can’t comment on its development. Still, he seems to hint at more Last of Us projects on the horizon, possibly teasing a third game in the franchise.

In a recent interview, Druckmann discussed the nuances of writing for video games and how his experiences with the first two seasons have influenced his creative process since then. Currently, he’s directing Naughty Dog’s new sci-fi action title, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which he cites as a primary reason for stepping back from the show after the second season. When asked about the third season, Druckmann candidly stated that he has no insight into what Mazin is planning.

“I wasn’t involved in shaping this season’s creative direction, and Naughty Dog did not have a creative role in the direction of this season,” Druckmann explained. “So I can’t personally speak to how production is progressing.”

Despite his absence from the show, Naughty Dog is reportedly working on something related to the series, though it’s unclear whether that involves a new game, a different adaptation, or other creative endeavors within the Last of Us universe.

“It’s important for us to note that as the creator of the games, Naughty Dog is still the steward of this IP, and even though this might be the end of this adaptation, we’re not done with The Last of Us,” he stated. “There are a couple of projects in the works that, when the time is right, I’m very excited to talk about.”

I’ve been vocal about my feelings regarding HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, considering it one of the more disappointing entries in video game adaptations. As I reflect on the show, I can’t help but feel apprehensive about its final season. Additionally, I’m cautious about the prospect of Naughty Dog developing a third game, especially since I’m not keen on exploring what happens after the conclusion of Part II. While I’d like to think that the “projects” Druckmann mentioned won’t include another game, his wording certainly leaves that door ajar.
