Xbox Limits Cloud Gaming and Adjusts Game Pass Offerings

Xbox is scaling back the benefits of Game Pass to manage costs. Beginning in November, cloud gaming will undergo significant changes, including the introduction of time limits for each Xbox account based on the Game Pass subscription tier. Cloud gaming has been a key feature of the subscription, making this downgrade disappointing for many.

In 2023, Xbox anticipated that cloud gaming would become the primary draw for Game Pass. They projected nearly 80 million subscribers by 2026, but that goal hasn’t materialized. With cloud gaming not achieving the popularity Xbox hoped for, it has become the focus of their latest cost-cutting measures.

Starting in November, Xbox will enforce monthly time limits on cloud gaming for all Game Pass tiers. Ultimate subscribers will receive up to 15 hours, Premium subscribers will get 10 hours, and Essential subscribers will have just five hours. Xbox claims these changes are due to the rising costs associated with cloud playtime and an expanding player base, yet they also state that only 4% of subscribers will be affected.

On a positive note, players will soon be able to access Xbox’s cloud gaming services without a Game Pass subscription. Playtime can be purchased directly from the Xbox Store, and it seems that these purchased hours will accumulate. However, it remains unclear if the hours allocated to subscribers each month will carry over once their subscription ends.

The announcement of cloud playtime restrictions has just been made, with more details expected soon. This will allow us to assess the impact of these changes and whether the cost of additional cloud hours will be reasonable for regular users. In November, Xbox plans to disclose information regarding the cost per hour for cloud gaming, the games eligible for this service, and pricing variations across different regions.

In July, a prediction suggested that a price drop for Game Pass would likely lead to a dilution of its best features due to CEO Asha Sharma’s restructuring efforts. It was noted that the trend for Game Pass seems to be moving towards offering less for the same price. This has already been seen with day-one releases, which were once available across all tiers but are now exclusive to the highest tier. Now, cloud gaming is following suit.

For the same subscription price, fans will have access to fewer cloud hours, and those wanting more will need to pay extra. Xbox asserts that this shift to a paywall for cloud gaming is intended to enhance its reliability and performance. Players can hopefully look forward to a better experience when they opt to pay for additional cloud playtime.
