The New Jedi Order era in Star Wars is set to progress after a long period of inactivity.

Despite the box office struggles of *The Mandalorian* and Grogu, development on two new *Star Wars* films is still moving forward. The latest issue of a production magazine has listed both *Star Wars: New Jedi Order* and an untitled film by Dave Filoni as projects currently in the works. While this doesn’t confirm that both films are officially greenlit and entering production, it does indicate they haven’t been put on hold.

*Star Wars: New Jedi Order* is expected to see Daisy Ridley return as Rey, set about 15 years after the events of *Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker*, as she embarks on the journey of rebuilding the Jedi. Given the mixed reception of the sequel trilogy, particularly *The Rise of Skywalker*, the film’s connection to that narrative presents a significant challenge.

The project has gone through multiple writers. Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were the initial screenwriters before being let go; they are now collaborating on HBO’s *Lanterns*. Steven Knight, known for *Peaky Blinders*, was also attached to write but exited the project in 2024. Recently, it was reported that George Nolfi is now penning the script, with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy set to direct. Originally slated for a December 17, 2027 release, *New Jedi Order* was removed from Disney’s schedule in May 2025.

Details about Filoni’s untitled film remain limited, but the production magazine describes it as focusing on the New Republic and wrapping up the interconnected stories from *The Mandalorian*, *The Book of Boba Fett*, *Ahsoka*, and other series on Disney Plus. While it was previously speculated that the film would connect to these recent shows, it will be intriguing to see if that direction changes following the box office performance of *The Mandalorian* and Grogu.

Earlier this year, Filoni was appointed as president and chief creative officer at Lucasfilm. He has been at the helm of several *Star Wars* series, including *The Clone Wars*, *Rebels*, and *Ahsoka*. While his work has generally been well-received, he has faced criticism for creating a complex and insular universe that requires viewers to be well-versed in the lore.

Currently, the only *Star Wars* film with a confirmed release date is *Star Wars: Starfighter*, which takes place five years after *Rise of Skywalker* and features Ryan Gosling as a pilot. Directed by Shawn Levy, it is set to hit theaters on May 28, 2027. Although there have been few *Star Wars* films in recent years, the franchise has remained vibrant through popular series like *The Ninth Jedi* and the recent tactical game *Star Wars: Zero Company*.

*Zero Company* carries more of an *Andor* vibe than you might expect.
