Resident Evil 2 Director Hopes Canceled Xbox Exclusive Might Still See the Light of Day

If there’s anyone in the gaming world who understands that patience pays off, it’s Hideki Kamiya. The visionary behind classics like Resident Evil 2 and co-founder of PlatinumGames has been waiting nearly two decades to unveil a sequel to Okami. While development on Okami 2 is progressing, Kamiya is still holding out hope for another of his projects: Scalebound.

Scalebound was first showcased during Microsoft’s 2014 E3 press conference as an exciting Xbox-exclusive title from PlatinumGames, with Kamiya at the helm. Over the years, snippets of information about this ambitious action game, featuring a soldier and his dragon companion, trickled out. After facing a delay, Microsoft ultimately canceled Scalebound in 2017. In the wake of the cancellation, Kamiya expressed his determination in a post, stating, “I’ll work hard to never have to let you down like this again.”

Even nearly a decade later, Kamiya remains optimistic. When asked if he had reached out to the new Xbox CEO about Scalebound, he replied, “Well, no, but now’s my opportunity to once again say that if they want to do it, let’s make it happen!” He also mentioned that Kento Koyama, the CEO of Clover and a former colleague at PlatinumGames, is eager to return to the project.

Kamiya recently caught up with several former Scalebound team members over dinner. While their conversation didn’t revolve solely around the canceled game, it did come up. “We all remembered how fun it was to work on Scalebound,” Kamiya shared. “Of course, there were some challenging moments, but the fact that people still look back on that time with fondness is something I find very gratifying as the director.”

Regardless of how long it takes, Kamiya is prepared to wait. “I strongly believe that if you want something strongly enough, you eventually find a way to make it happen,” he asserted. “That’s the case with Okami right now, where even after all these years, the opportunity has presented itself again, and I hope that will be the case with Scalebound in the future as well.”
