Granblue Fantasy Relink Team Launches New Label to Accelerate Smaller Game Releases

Cygames has been riding a wave of positive reviews and fan enthusiasm for its recent titles, such as Umamusume: Pretty Derby and Granblue Fantasy Relink. However, the company has also faced challenges with lengthy public delays as it strives for perfection in its games. To alleviate the pressure of high expectations tied to its flagship projects, Cygames has introduced a new label called Cygames Edge, which will focus on smaller and mid-sized internally developed titles, starting with Where the Seeds Fall.

Granblue Fantasy Relink experienced a shift in development from PlatinumGames to an in-house team, ultimately launching eight years after its initial announcement in Summer 2024, followed by an expansion earlier this year. Meanwhile, Project Awakening and Garnet Arena: Mages of Magicary, announced in 2016 and 2021 respectively, have seen years of silence, though the company assures fans that development is ongoing.

Cygames Edge aims to break away from the AAA focus of the main company, instead prioritizing smaller games with streamlined teams to deliver unique experiences more frequently. Where the Seeds Fall exemplifies this approach, offering a compact three-hour action-adventure platformer where players navigate a massive tree, with added replayability through modes like a time trial for speedrunners. This initiative aligns with similar efforts from other Japanese developers, such as GYAAR Studio under Bandai Namco, allowing smaller teams to refine their skills on self-contained projects. In this case, Cygames has teamed up with ZEREO Inc. for development.

Cygames Edge is all about pushing creative boundaries, promising distinctive titles that shine with individuality for players around the globe.

In line with their goal of rapid development, these titles were showcased during a recent State of Play and are set to launch digitally on Steam, PS5, and Switch 2 on November 5th. As this small experiment unfolds, it will be exciting to see what other projects emerge from Cygames Edge in the future.
