Speculation Grows Among DC Fans About James Gunn’s Choice for the New Wonder Woman
When James Gunn cast Adria Arjona for the upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, it was reported that she would portray the lesser-known DC character Maxima. However, many fans have speculated that Arjona might actually be stepping into the iconic role of Wonder Woman. A recent video featuring her discussing her intense workout routine for her latest project has reignited these rumors.
In the video, Arjona is careful to keep her character under wraps, which has only fueled speculation that she could be the next Wonder Woman.
In a recent clip from Women’s Health, Arjona shares her boxing and weightlifting regimen, which sounds tough enough to challenge even an Amazonian warrior. “I’m enjoying the transformation, but it’s hard work,” she mentions. “I’ve never felt stronger, but it’s hard. The excitement of playing the woman I’m playing gives me everything I need to wake up. Physically, it’s exhausting, but it’s all for the greater good.”
Fans are interpreting her enthusiasm as a hint that she might be taking on the role of Wonder Woman, arguing that her excitement wouldn’t match the relatively obscure character of Maxima, who has prompted many ‘Who Is Maxima in DC Comics?’ searches online.
If Arjona is indeed playing Wonder Woman in Man of Tomorrow, she could find herself in a similar situation to Sadie Sink, who faced a barrage of questions about her secret role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day as Jean Grey. Whether Arjona will have to navigate a year of speculation about her DCU debut remains to be seen, as the film is set to release on July 9, 2027.
Gunn’s DC Studios is also reportedly developing a standalone Wonder Woman film, with the script being penned by Ana Nogueira, known for her work on Supergirl.
Should Man of Tomorrow introduce the DCU’s Wonder Woman first—similar to how the original Superman film introduced Green Lantern, Supergirl, and Hawkgirl—Arjona would officially take over the role from Gal Gadot. Before Gadot’s portrayal, Wonder Woman was brought to life by Cathy Lee Crosby in a 1974 TV movie and by Lynda Carter in the beloved 1975 television series.
Man of Tomorrow will feature David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult reprising their roles as Superman and Lex Luthor, respectively. Returning cast members include Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl. New faces in the Superman universe include Aaron Pierre as John Stewart/Green Lantern and Andre Royo, Matthew Lillard, and Sinqua Walls in undisclosed roles.
