Europe Launches Its First Commercial Orbital Rocket

German company Isar Aerospace has made history by successfully launching Europe’s first fully commercial orbital rocket. After a previous attempt last March ended in a crash just 30 seconds into flight, the company has now successfully placed its two-stage Spectrum rocket into low Earth orbit from a spaceport in Norway.

CEO and Co-Founder Daniel Metzler expressed the significance of this achievement, stating:
> “Today, Isar Aerospace opened space from Continental Europe. Launch continues to be the largest bottleneck for the global space industry and from today on, there is a true alternative for commercial and institutional customers … Europe now has sovereign access to space. We have entered into a new chapter for European spaceflight.”

Historically, Europe has depended on Arianespace and Avio, which are primarily government-funded. Given the current global political landscape, this milestone is especially crucial for European nations that may see the United States as a less reliable ally and have lost access to Russian Soyuz rockets due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The European Space Agency has also emphasized a “buy European” approach as a key aspect of its policies.
