Onimusha Hits 1 Million Sales in Just One Day as Capcom Plans to Revive More Classic Franchises
Onimusha: Way of the Sword marks a triumphant return for Capcom, being the first new mainline entry in the beloved historical action series in two decades. The game sold over 1 million copies on its launch day, as announced by the developer.
This successful debut adds to Capcom’s impressive streak in 2026, which kicked off with Resident Evil Requiem, surpassing 8 million copies sold, followed by the original sci-fi action title Pragmata, which sold 2.5 million copies, and Monster Hunter Stories 3. All four titles have received widespread acclaim, boasting Metacritic scores of 85 or higher.
And the excitement isn’t slowing down; on October 9, Capcom will launch the Dark Arisen expansion for Dragon’s Dogma 2, along with a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game. The day-one Switch 2 releases for all these titles have been a standout feature of Capcom’s hot streak in 2026.
Capcom has also expressed its commitment to reviving more of its classic franchises to complement its powerhouse series like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter. “In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently,” the company stated. “The goal is to maximize corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, including this title.”
Next on the revival list is Mega Man, with the retro action-platformer set to return in 2027 with Dual Override. Fans have been eagerly awaiting new entries in the Dino Crisis and Breath of Fire series for even longer than they’ve been hoping for a new Onimusha. Could their time finally be on the horizon?
