Audi Unveils the A2 E-tron: Its Most Budget-Friendly and Efficient Electric Vehicle to Date
When it comes to electric vehicles, finding one that balances affordability and energy efficiency can feel like a quest for the holy grail. Often, you have to choose between a budget-friendly option that lacks range or a high-performance model that hits your wallet hard. Enter Audi with a game-changer: the A2 E-tron compact crossover, which starts at a reasonable £32,200 (around $45,000). This vehicle boasts an impressive low drag coefficient and a variety of battery and drivetrain configurations that can deliver a remarkable range of up to 401 miles when optimized.
Currently, this rear-wheel drive compact is exclusive to the European market, leaving American drivers hoping for a future release. Perhaps Audi will reconsider its strategy, or maybe the U.S. market will come to appreciate the benefits of a compact, efficient EV sporting the Audi emblem.
The A2 E-tron exemplifies efficiency through its aerodynamic design. Features like flush door handles, strategically placed air intakes, a fully enclosed underbody, and gap reducers around the wheel arches contribute to a drag coefficient of just 0.24, a first for the brand. Additionally, it introduces bidirectional charging, enabling vehicle-to-load capabilities via a trunk outlet or vehicle-to-home functionality with a compatible DC wall box.
With the right motor and battery configuration, the A2 E-tron achieves an impressive consumption rate of just 12.8 kWh per 62 miles (100 km), while the top performer in the lineup can reach up to 401 miles (645 km) on the European WLTP cycle. Inside, the A2 E-tron features a sleek curved MMI panoramic display that integrates an 11.9-inch digital gauge cluster with a 12.8-inch center touchscreen.
Clever storage solutions are also a highlight, thanks to a Fidlock magnetic fastening system that allows users to secure items like cupholders and charging cable bags in designated spots throughout the cabin and trunk. This innovative tech, familiar to cyclists for keeping water bottles in place, makes its debut in a production car with the A2 E-tron.
While Audi has shifted away from an all-EV strategy, the company is open to a blend of gas, hybrid, and electric options. Although the A2 may not be joining its more powerful siblings like the S6 Sportback E-tron at dealerships just yet, the future remains uncertain.
