Nintendo unveils gameplay and release date for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake.

Nintendo has unveiled exciting new details about the highly anticipated remake of the Nintendo 64 classic, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, during a recent Direct focused on the Zelda franchise. The first full trailer for the Switch 2 remake was showcased, along with a release date and fresh gameplay insights, highlighting Nintendo’s commitment to revitalizing the beloved 1998 title.

Zelda enthusiasts won’t have to wait long for Link’s adventure to resume: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is set to launch on Switch 2 this November.

Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma provided a sneak peek at the remake, featuring gameplay of Link navigating Kokiri Forest and interacting with characters like Saria. Aonuma noted that Nintendo has reimagined Ocarina of Time with a graphical style that evokes nostalgia for the original while blending photorealism with stylized visuals, resulting in a richly detailed world.

Gameplay enhancements were also revealed, including the ability for Link to jump manually in this remake. Aonuma showcased the Great Deku Tree, combat mechanics, and Link’s early-game item, the slingshot, along with expansive areas beyond Kokiri Forest, such as the open-world Hyrule Field and Hyrule Castle Town. A new dash move will allow Link to traverse the vast landscapes of Hyrule more swiftly.

The game will feature a system called Threads of Time, which lets players track their story progress and upcoming quests. This system will visually represent the narrative of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time through an in-game tapestry. Additionally, Aonuma highlighted new features like audio detection for playing the ocarina.

A 15-minute gameplay segment of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake was also showcased.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is scheduled for release on November 5 for Nintendo Switch 2.

The remake was first announced in June, with an initial teaser that included narration from the Great Deku Tree, reminiscent of the original game’s opening. The teaser depicted Link, the only Kokiri villager without a fairy, experiencing restless sleep. In the original Ocarina of Time, Link has a vision of Sheik and Zelda fleeing Hyrule Castle while being chased by Ganondorf.

Originally launched in 1998 for the Nintendo 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time marked a significant evolution for the series, transitioning from a 2D, top-down perspective to immersive 3D environments. It introduced groundbreaking features like the target-lock system (Z-targeting) and context-sensitive buttons, which have since become staples in 3D adventure games.

Nintendo re-released Ocarina of Time for the GameCube in 2003, bundling it with the challenging Master Quest mode as a pre-order bonus for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. A remake with stereoscopic 3D effects and various quality-of-life improvements was launched for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011.

Other titles in the Zelda series have received “HD” or “DX” visual upgrades, including The Wind Waker, Skyward Sword, and Twilight Princess. The most radical reimagining to date has been the Switch version of Link’s Awakening, which debuted in 2019 with a striking new graphical style.
