First Trailer Released for the Unseen ChatGPT Movie from Amazon

Artificial intelligence has transitioned from a trendy term in Silicon Valley to a part of everyday life for many, whether they like it or not. OpenAI has become a key player in this AI revolution, with ChatGPT emerging as its most recognizable product. It seems only fitting that Hollywood would take an interest in the story behind its creation.

The success of films like The Social Network demonstrated that the tumultuous beginnings of tech giants can translate into gripping narratives. Following that trend, we’ve seen films about the rise of BlackBerry, Ford’s rivalry with Ferrari, and Nike’s quest for Michael Jordan in Air. So, why not craft a biopic about OpenAI, complete with a sleek, minimalist title to signal its cool factor?

The first teaser for Artificial has just been released, and it’s as enigmatic as you’d expect from a film focused on the minds behind ChatGPT.

This initial glimpse offers little in terms of plot specifics, instead opting for dramatic voice-overs that emphasize the significance of ChatGPT. Andrew Garfield takes on the role of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and much of the trailer features him in a suspenseful wander through what looks like a high-tech bunker filled with hydroponics and an unsettling array of weapons. (What’s with the underground bunker? Why the firearms? Is there a connection to ChatGPT? The film will likely clarify these points.)

Accompanying the visuals are increasingly foreboding voice-overs that suggest we’re witnessing the dawn of civilization’s decline. Lines like “We’ve created a machine that will solve the world’s problems” lead into “We opened Pandora’s box together,” culminating in “Countries will fall — industries are gonna collapse.”

It’s a hefty premise for a film about tech executives squabbling over corporate control, but that’s the tone Artificial seems to be aiming for. The plot revolves around a particularly chaotic moment in tech history: the five-day span in November 2023 when Altman was abruptly ousted as OpenAI’s CEO, throwing the company into turmoil before his swift reinstatement. Microsoft got involved, OpenAI staff threatened to resign, and the entire episode became a major business headline.

Adding to the intrigue is the film’s own unusual backstory, which feels almost scripted. Artificial was initially in development at Amazon MGM Studios, but Amazon pulled out just as the film neared completion. This decision raised eyebrows, especially since Amazon had recently formed a significant partnership with OpenAI, reportedly involving a $50 billion investment. While there’s no official link between the two events, the timing certainly sparked speculation.

After Netflix, A24, and Focus passed on the project, Neon stepped in to handle distribution. They are now preparing to give Artificial a theatrical release and are gearing up for an awards campaign.

And here’s the kicker: Artificial is set to hit theaters on Christmas Day. While families gather to watch heartwarming tales of holiday spirit, audiences will have the chance to see Andrew Garfield’s Sam Altman delve into a mysterious bunker while ominous warnings of societal collapse echo around him.

Artificial is directed by Luca Guadagnino and penned by Simon Rich.
