South Park Creators Reveal Upcoming Name Change for the Series

The creators of South Park are shaking things up after three decades by officially renaming the show, though it remains to be seen how long this new title will last. On Tuesday, Trey Parker and Matt Stone unveiled the new name as part of their latest satirical jab at U.S. President Donald Trump, while also taking a shot at their parent company and other corporations that seem to bow to the current administration.

The show will now be known as South America.

“Inspired by the courage and patriotism of tech giants like Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA. A special thanks to our parent company for their capitulation,” Parker and Stone stated in their announcement.

This name change is a playful response to Trump’s executive orders that rebranded the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America and Lake Ontario as Lake America. Following these orders, Apple and Google promptly updated their maps to reflect the new names. Trump has also suggested renaming New Mexico to New America, a move he has no legal power to enforce, but one that some in Silicon Valley would likely support to gain favor with him.

In recent years, Trump has been a frequent target for South Park. In Seasons 27 and 28, the show depicted him in outrageous scenarios, including a bizarre encounter with Satan.

As for the extent of the renaming, it’s still unclear whether just the town or the entire show will officially adopt the South America title, and how this change will be implemented. Currently, the show’s social media accounts have been updated to reflect the new name, although they still retain the @southpark handle. We’ll have to wait about a week to find out if the series title will officially change. The 29th season of South P… sorry, South America, is set to premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 10 p.m. on Comedy Central.

New episodes will be available for streaming on Paramount Plus globally, with next-day access in the U.S., Canada, and Australia.

Next year, South Park will mark its 30th anniversary.

Seasons 27 and 28 not only took aim at Trump but also delivered a heavy dose of nostalgia.
