Nintendo announces unexpected Metroid title set for release in 2027.

Less than two years after the launch of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Samus Aran is set for another thrilling journey. During a recent Nintendo Direct, the announcement of Metroid Ravenous was made. This new title will be exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2 and is scheduled for release on January 28, 2027, marking the next 2D installment in the beloved series.

The announcement trailer features Samus narrating a classic Metroid storyline. She finds herself under attack on a moon by a mysterious faction, forcing her to delve into the depths below, where she must find a way to escape. The trailer showcases a montage of exhilarating 2D action, highlighting Samus battling a variety of formidable foes.

In this adventure, the bounty hunter reveals a new energy-draining ability that allows her to absorb her enemies. “It’s eat or be eaten,” she states. Throughout the trailer, Samus’ suit appears to have undergone changes, possibly reflecting her ability to adapt based on the enemies she consumes. This could unlock new attacks, some of which are teased in the trailer, including a striking green energy form.

As has become common practice, Nintendo has not disclosed the developer behind Metroid Ravenous, but there are strong indications. The last 2D title, Metroid Dread, was crafted by MercurySteam, who also developed Metroid: Samus Returns. Given the striking similarities in aesthetics and gameplay between Ravenous and Dread, it’s reasonable to assume that MercurySteam is at the helm of this new project. This is promising news for Metroid enthusiasts, as Dread is widely regarded as one of the finest entries in the franchise. In a review, it was noted that Dread “reimagines the Metroid format with confidence and care, trusting players to make leaps along the way. While navigating its intricate path of epic boss battles, rewarding upgrades, and otherworldly settings, it felt like the Metroid game I’ve been waiting for.”

In addition to the game, a special edition will be released, featuring a SteelBook case and an amiibo depicting Samus in one of her new forms. Two more amiibo figures will also be available—one of Samus and another of a Chozo statue—launching alongside the game on January 28, 2027.
