Yo-Kai Watch 2: Haunted Domain Gets Yet Another Name Change for the Fourth Time

Level-5 is making a triumphant return, reviving one of its most beloved franchises that fans haven’t seen in the U.S. for seven years: Yo-Kai Watch. During the latest Nintendo Direct, it was announced that a new Yo-Kai Watch game is on the way… sort of. It’s titled Yo-Kai Watch 2: Haunted Domain, and it appears to be a remake of Yo-Kai Watch 2, which has previously gone by the names Bony Spirits, Fleshy Souls, and Psychic Specters. Talk about confusing!

Originally released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2016 in the U.S., Yo-Kai Watch 2 served as a sequel to the first game. The Yo-Kai Watch series revolves around collecting Yo-Kai, which are mythical Japanese spirits that can be friendly, mischievous, or even malevolent. Players take on the role of Nate or Katie, who uses the Yo-Kai Watch to see, track, communicate with, and befriend these elusive spirits, utilizing captured Yo-Kai in battles against others. Yo-Kai Watch 2 featured nearly 450 different Yo-Kai to collect.

The game was a massive hit, especially in Japan. The initial two versions, Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls, along with the expanded Psychic Specters, collectively sold over 6 million copies before any of them made their way west. However, the reception in the U.S. was more subdued, and a third installment, featuring Sushi and Tempura versions along with a third called Sukiyaki, didn’t perform nearly as well. Yo-Kai Watch 4 never reached U.S. shores, launching during a period when Level-5 was scaling back its releases outside Japan.

Given this context, it makes sense for Yo-Kai Watch 2 to receive a remake, though the reasoning behind the fourth name change remains unclear. According to a press release, Haunted Domain will feature enhanced graphics, new story content, and additional Yo-Kai. As for the release date, details are still under wraps, but we know the game is currently in development.
