Ikea Launches Official Skyrim Mod Featuring Matt Berry as a Shelf Character
This morning, I never imagined I’d be diving into a new mod for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim featuring Matt Berry as a talking Ikea shelf. Yet, here we are! While I recognize this is a playful marketing move from the beloved budget furniture giant, I can’t help but appreciate how well-executed it is.
On September 9, a trailer dropped for a new Skyrim Creations mod called “KALLAX STORAGEBORN.” This mod introduces the iconic Kallax shelf into the game, but it’s far more than just a simple addition. Ikea has invested real resources into creating something much more intricate than I anticipated.
The mod is available today for free through Bethesda’s Creations system on Xbox and PC.
Once players become overencumbered, a questline kicks off, sending you to an ancient dungeon to gather the materials needed to construct the Kallax shelf. After assembling it and equipping a magical Allen wrench weapon, the shelf springs to life, and Matt Berry begins to chat with you.
This isn’t just a brief cameo; he has a plethora of voiced lines and a dedicated questline where you help him collect heirlooms to recover his lost memories. You can catch all the action in an hour-long playthrough of the Ikea mod by a popular YouTuber.
So, what can this shelf do? It follows you around Skyrim with some hilariously quirky animations. Plus, it helps you manage your inventory by allowing you to store excess items on it. These items even appear on the shelf in the game world, which is a nice touch. You can summon Kallax whenever you need him using a new shout spell introduced in the mod. When you call for the shelf, your character shouts “IKEA!”
While I might not reinstall Skyrim just to hear Matt Berry discuss Elder Scrolls lore as a shelf, I’ll definitely be watching more footage of this amusing marketing stunt on YouTube, all while glancing at my own Kallax shelves and wondering if they’ll ever start chatting like a character from What We Do In The Shadows.
