Community Star Remains Optimistic About Future Movie Adaptation
Community has always had a unique way of sticking around. The NBC sitcom transformed into a cult favorite during its six-season run, cultivating a passionate fanbase that continues to quote, meme, and revisit the series long after its conclusion. Now, four years after the announcement of a Community movie, at least one of its stars remains hopeful that it will actually come to fruition.
The show aired from 2009 to 2015, chronicling the quirky escapades of a group of students at Greendale Community College. Its second season famously introduced the phrase “six seasons and a movie,” which became a rallying cry as the series navigated multiple cancellations, network changes, and behind-the-scenes turmoil. While Community successfully completed its six seasons, the movie has proven to be a much tougher challenge.
The film was announced in September 2022, with Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong all set to reprise their roles, alongside creator Dan Harmon and writer Andrew Guest. Despite occasional updates, the project has yet to begin filming.
In a recent chat, Pudi, who portrayed the pop-culture-savvy Abed Nadir, shared that he often learns about the movie’s progress from fans rather than the production team.
“In typical Community fashion, I think people know about the Community movie or updates about the world online faster than I do,” Pudi remarked. “So sometimes I’ll just ask people like, ‘Did we do it already? Are we in it? Have we filmed it? Are we waiting? Are we in post-production?'”
He expressed his excitement about the show’s enduring legacy, noting, “It’s been incredible seeing the show just kind of live on, catch on with new fans and new generations.”
Pudi also mentioned that the cast is eager to reunite, highlighting that there have been “a few opportunities recently” that have heightened their enthusiasm. Most importantly, he remains optimistic about the film’s prospects.
“So I’m hopeful. I believe it will happen,” he stated. “I’m very much an optimist and I think this is going to happen.”
This optimism persists despite the movie facing another scheduling hiccup earlier this year. In March, writer Andrew Guest revealed on a podcast that production had come “very close to shooting” before a scheduling conflict with one of the cast members caused another delay. Guest emphasized the importance of having the full ensemble together, as the chemistry among the actors is a vital element of Community.
As of now, there’s still no release date—or even a confirmed production date—for the Community movie. But if Pudi’s optimism holds true, “six seasons and a movie” may eventually evolve from being just a running joke into a reality.
