Meet Skyrim’s quirky new character: a talking IKEA shelf brought to life by Matt Berry!
There are few experiences in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim more humbling than finally taking down a formidable foe, looting their body, and then realizing you’re too weighed down to move. Luckily, IKEA has stepped into the realm of Tamriel to tackle Skyrim’s ongoing issue with clutter.
IKEA has introduced a new official Skyrim mod called Kallax Storageborn, a free addition that brings a sentient Kallax shelving unit as a companion. In a delightful twist, this shelf is voiced by Matt Berry, known for his role in What We Do in the Shadows.
The mod, available for free through Skyrim’s Creations system on Xbox and PC, kicks off when players find themselves over-encumbered. The Dragonborn is then sent to an ancient dungeon to gather the components needed to build the enigmatic Kallax. Once assembled and armed with a magical Allen wrench weapon, the shelf springs to life, engaging players with Berry’s distinctive booming voice.
Kallax isn’t just a clever marketing gimmick; he can join players on their quests, assisting them in managing the endless loot that Skyrim encourages you to hoard. Players can store their surplus items with Kallax, and those items will visibly appear on the shelf in the game world. The mod also introduces a new shout that allows players to summon their shelving companion whenever needed, simply by shouting “IKEA!”
Additionally, the mod features a complete questline focused on Kallax and his intriguing backstory, where players help the shelf recover lost heirlooms and memories. There are two IKEA-themed dungeons, a Clutter Golem boss battle, and new gear, including an Allen Key weapon and a Meatball Helmet.
While it’s clearly a marketing strategy, the depth of the mod might entice Skyrim players to give it a try. Will it lead players to rush out to buy a Kallax shelf? Probably not. But they’ll definitely want that Meatball Helmet.
Transform Skyrim into a modern experience without breaking the bank on a new GPU.
