Kojima’s Physint Transitions from PlayStation to Xbox

PlayStation has officially ended its collaboration with Hideo Kojima on PHYSINT, marking a surprising shift for the game director’s return to the action-espionage genre that made him famous. In a dramatic turn, this spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid has now found a new home with Xbox.

Kojima revealed that the change came after PlayStation unexpectedly canceled the project in June, prompting Kojima Productions to seek a new partner.

“In mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project,” Kojima shared on X. “Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner. In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in Xbox a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward.”

Kojima’s upcoming project, the enigmatic horror title OD, is also set to be developed under Xbox. Reports indicate that discussions between Kojima and Xbox’s new CEO Asha Sharma have been ongoing since her appointment in February, focusing on collaboration across games, TV, and film. Xbox’s announcement of acquiring PHYSINT highlighted a commitment to work with Kojima Productions on bringing new stories to wider audiences.

“Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life,” Sharma stated. “We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen Xbox to work with Kojima Productions on PHYSINT. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at Xbox.”

In response, PlayStation acknowledged the decision to step back from the collaboration, expressing admiration for Kojima’s vision. They emphasized that their relationship with him remains strong and that they look forward to future collaborations.

Kojima’s connection with PlayStation dates back to the original Metal Gear Solid’s launch in 1998, and the platform was Kojima Productions’ first partner after the studio became independent, publishing Death Stranding and its sequel as timed exclusives for PS4 and PS5. The partnership for PHYSINT was initially announced with much fanfare in early 2024.

However, the performance of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach may have disappointed Sony, with analysts estimating sales at around 2 million copies, significantly lower than the original’s 5 million copies sold in a similar timeframe. Sony may have been frustrated that many players accessed Death Stranding through other platforms, as it was briefly free on the Epic Games Store and available on Game Pass.

Kojima’s projects are known for their star-studded casts and high production values, which likely require substantial budgets. His ambition for PHYSINT is to create a title that functions as both a game and a movie. This may have led Sony to reconsider the value of its investment in Kojima’s vision.

The loss of PHYSINT to a competitor adds to the challenges PlayStation faces, especially amid criticism over its decision to cease production of physical PlayStation games. Meanwhile, Xbox is working to improve its image and regain its footing in the console market, clearly willing to invest in Kojima Productions to gain an edge in the ongoing console wars.

Hideo Kojima’s spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid is expected to include a tribute to Speed.
